In the third quarter of 2017, the amount of aluminum foil imported from the United States decreased
The latest foreign trade data released by the Alcoa Association showed that despite two consecutive months of decline, imports of aluminum in the first three quarters of 2017 (as of September) increased by 25% over the same period of 2016.
From the growth rate of the first three quarters of 2017, it is estimated that the total import of aluminum will reach 17 billion pounds in 2017, an increase of 18% compared with that of last year. This year, imports of almost all types of commodities in the United States have increased. Imports of semi-finished goods increased by 17.4% in the first three quarters compared with the same period last year.
The import of aluminum sheet in the first three quarters of 2017 increased by 19.5% compared with the same period last year, mainly due to the increase of aluminum sheet imports from china. At the same time, the import of aluminum sheet in China increased by 34%, almost reaching the annual import level in 2016.
The import of aluminum foil in the first three quarters of 2017 increased by 12% compared with the same period last year. In the last two months of the last quarter, the number of imports of aluminum foil from China decreased substantially. In January 2017 -7 months, the number of monthly average aluminum foils imported from China reached 31 million pounds; the number in August decreased to 14 million 100 thousand pounds, mainly because the United States began levying a large amount of tariffs on China's imports of aluminum foil. With the decision of the US Department of Commerce to impose punitive tariffs on China's imports of aluminum foil (formerly 81%), the total imports of aluminum from China will be further reduced by 97%-62%.
According to China Customs statistics, in the first three quarters of 2017, the amount of semi-finished aluminum exports in the United States decreased by 6.5%, mainly because the amount of extruded lumber exported to Vietnam was reduced to 111 million 800 thousand pounds, nearly 87% less than the export volume of 857 million 500 thousand pounds in the same period of 2016. But the number of exports to North American free trade areas increased by 14.5% over the same period.
